Montenegrin government ready to temporarily delay implementation of Freedom of Religion Law

European Commissioner for Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Oliver Varhelyi said that Montenegrin Prime Minister Dusko Markovic informed him that the government is ready to temporarily delay the implementation of the Freedom of Religion Law.

Multiple sources confirmed to Vijesti that Varhelyi conveyed the message at a meeting with the Montenegrin opposition.

Markovic allegedly offered to postpone the application of the law until the Constitutional Court's decision, and in the event that the initiative of the Montenegrin-Littoral Metropolitanate of the Serbian Orthodox Chuch gets rejected, to delay it until the decision of the court in Strasbourg.

Unofficially, the daily Vijesti received explanation from the government that this was a logical move, because this is a special law, lex specialis, while the constitutionality of this legislation is very important.

Vijesti is yet to receive answers to the questions formally sent to the government.
