Trial of "Igor the Russian" begins: Serbian put in cage, smiling all the while
The trial of Subotica man Norbert Feher, 38, also known as Igor Vaclavic, Igor Srbin ("Igor the Serb") and Igor Rus ("Igor the Russian"), began today in Spain. Feher is on trial for attempted murder of two farmers in 2017.
Charged with multiple sexual assaults and robberies, Igor Rus is considered one of Spain's most dangerous prisoners, which is why the trial is accompanied by rigorous security measures. Vaclavic arrived at the courthouse smiling and surrounded by agents of the Spanish police's special units.
Rus was immediately placed in a special glass cage made for the purpose of this trial, as authorities believe Feher will do anything to escape.
According to Spanish media, Igor Rus admitted today before the court that he shot the two men in 2017, as well as that he illegally brought weapons to Spain.
Rus was smiling all the time in the courtroom, waving at reporters. While making his statement, he described in detail the attack on farmers that happened just over two years ago. He admitted to hiding in the home of one of the victims, to at one point notice that someone was approaching the property.
Vaclavic then said he went outside armed, shooting at the homeowner and a locksmith who came with him to fix the door on the property. Igor Rus said at the trial that he didn't intend to kill the victims and didn't check whether they carried weapons.
He explained that he only wanted to scare them away. He said he had two rifles that he brought from Italy, from where he had escaped several months earlier. In Italy, he killed two people, for which he is facing a life sentence in that country.
Vaclavic said he entered Spain on September 21, 2017 and that he was hiding during the last days of November that year in the Teruel Mountains area, near the Albalate del Arzobispo, where the attempted murder of the two farmers took place.
Prosecutor sought nearly 10 years in prison
The prosecutor requested that Vaclavic be sentenced to nine years and 11 months in prison for attempted murder and three years for illegal possession of a weapon. He also demanded that the victims be paid around 117,000 euros.
Vaclavic sat in a separate booth throughout the hearing, in a so-called glass cage fitted with a small microphone that the defendant cannot touch.
