Star of David flag displayed on Serbian Presidency building in Belgrade: "Never again"
International Holocaust Remembrance Day will be marked in Israel this week, along with the 75th anniversary of the Red Army liberating Auschwitz.
Ahead of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic's departure for Israel where he will take part in the ceremonies, a flag with the Star of David has been displayed on the building of the Presidency of Serbia in Belgrade's Andricev Venac, along with the Serbian state flag.
"This badge was a symbol of the attempted destruction of the Jews by the Nazis. Now it is a symbol of honor. 75 years after. Never again," President Aleksandar Vucic wrote on his official Twitter and Instagram accounts, posting a photo of the Presidency building.
Овај знак био је симбол покушаја уништења јеврејског народа од стране нациста. Данас је симбол части. 75 година касније. Никада више. pic.twitter.com/Jix9jCxtKd— Александар Вучић (@predsednikrs) January 21, 2020
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reacted to this to thank the president of Serbia on Twitter.
Thank you President Vucic. Looking forward to meet you in Jerusalem https://t.co/lGtDOBQoJl— Benjamin Netanyahu (@netanyahu) January 21, 2020
International Holocaust Remembrance Day will be marked in Israel this week, along with the 75th anniversary of the Red Army liberating Auschwitz, a death camp where about 1.3 million people were killed by the Nazis, including more than one million Jews.
More than 40 leaders, including Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, will attend a ceremony at the Yad Vashem Memorial Center in Jerusalem on Thursday.
