Parliamentary elections most likely to be held on April 26?
Parliamentary elections are most likely to take place on April 26, according to the daily Vecernje Novosti. This date was mentioned today during the third round of the dialogue between the government and the opposition, under the mediation of the European Parliament, held in the Assembly of Serbia - and it is almost certain that Serbia will vote precisely on that day.
In today's round of talks at the Assembly, representatives of the European Union suggested that the elections should take place "towards the end of the legal deadline." As they explained, this would leave enough time to implement the laws that have been adopted as part of a package to improve electoral conditions.
As we have learned, representatives of the authorities and the opposition agreed with this suggestion and said that two dates are considered - April 26 and May 3.
According to the law, the president of the state calls elections 90 days before the date the previous Assembly had been constituted (in this case June 3, 2016) - which means that the president must call the elections in early March. Less than 45 and more than 60 days must elapse from that day until the vote. This means that elections must be held on May 3 at the latest.
