Kalemegdan migrants reported to authorities: Despite being asked to move, they still camp there
After we published a video and a photo of a group of migrants camping under Kalemegdan, sitting on an worn out armchair, burning a fire and littering, the Belgrade Fortress company, which is in charge of this historical complex, reacted.
As they say, these people have been seen before, warned and asked to leave.
"Security of the Public Company Belgrade Fortress repeatedly reacted on similar occasions and removed the aforementioned persons from the premises of the Fortress and Kalemegdan Park. Despite the pleas and warnings, these persons are returning to the Belgrade Fortress, which is why, after the last similar gathering, we turned to other competent services for help as well," the company stressed.
The migrants are using a less busy part of the fortress near the Sava Gate, close to Beton Hala, where they light fires along the ancient walls, cooking and keeping themselves warm.
Cultural site cannot be shelter
As they say in Belgrade Fortress, the company understands the difficult situation that migrants face but heritage sites cannot provide that kind of shelter.
"With all the understanding we have for the difficult situation this population is in, we must emphasize that cultural sites cannot provide this kind of shelter. We believe that in cooperation with other city services we will permanently solve this problem," Belgrade Fortress said.
