Grave dug up in Stari Banovci: Head taken from casket, newsroom receives disturbing email
A dug up grave and removed body parts around it - that's the bizarre scene that workers of the Public Utility Company Cistoca encountered on Wednesday at the cemetery in Stari Banovci. The tombstone was removed, and then the grave was dug up, especially in the area around the head that was taken away together with the cross and parts of the casket, buried there 25 years ago.
The police have been informed about the case and they investigated the scene.
For the time being, the motive behind this act is not known, while different versions of the story are circulating, anything from material gain to this being the work of a mentally ill person or a cult.
An unsigned email arrived to the RTV newsroom saying that the family of the late teacher Dragica Kristic, who was buried 25 years ago with a large amount of jewelry, learned that her grave had been robbed and the jewelry stolen.
The late teacher's family, however, denies these claims and all other rumors, including that she was buried with any jewelry or valuables.
There have been other cases of desecration of tombstones and graves, but the removal of the body of the deceased is unprecedented in this part of the region of Srem, in northern Serbia.
The reasons and the perpetrators of this act will be determined by the investigation.
