71 human trafficking victims in Serbia in one year: You never know where danger lurks
Trafficking in human beings is one of the most complex criminal phenomenons in modern society, a violation of basic human rights guaranteed by international law and national legislation. Therefore, the fight against human trafficking requires coordination of all relevant bodies and institutions, the local community and the non-governmental sector, with mandatory international cooperation.
According to the latest data, trafficking is one of the most profitable branches of the criminal industry worth more than $150 million a year - while more than 40 million people are currently victims of trafficking around the world, 25 percent of whom are children.
Unitas Fund, a non-governmental organization, together with its partners - the Ministry of Trade, Tourism and Telecommunications, the National Contact Center for Security "Smart and Free", the Red Cross of Serbia and Wikimedia Serbia - seeks to combat trafficking through prevention and education, and with that goal in mind organizes joint educational workshops to point to the dangers that lurk, both online and in real life.
A panel will be organized at the Higher Education School for Social Workers, Speech Therapists and Occupational Therapists, where students will have the opportunity be informed and prepare for their future work on the topic.
In 2018, according to official data, the Center for the Protection of Victims of Trafficking in Humans formally identified 76 victims of human trafficking, 71 of whom are Serbian nationals, while a report for 2019 is expected by the end of December.
To mark October 18, RTS2 will screen the movie "Observers" starting at 1:40 pm, which serves to inform children, young people and the general population about human trafficking. We urge you not to miss it and get informed in time.
