Objects from Neolithic Age unearthed in Zrenjanin, including a carved female figure
Archeological items have been discovered in the Zrenjanin City Garden during reconstruction works on a heat pipe, which began more than a month ago.
Many archaeological fragments from the oldest Neolithic period have been found - items characteristic of the Starcevo Culture and with the elements of the Vinca Culture.
In recent days, experts from the National Museum in Zrenjanin have also joined the workers working on the heat pipe.
"When we noticed the first signs of something indicating that an archeological site might be beneath our feet, we came to the site and have for a few days been digging and sifting through what was, unfortunately, dug up by an excavator," Dejan Vorgic, curator at the National Museum, told the website zrenjaninski.com
Among a multitude of pottery pieces and individual skeleton pieces, two fragment of an engraved female figure were also discovered. According to archaeologists, such fragments are rarely found. They hope to find the rest of the pieces and complete the figure, making the discovery even more significant.
Vorgic notes that something very valuable has been found from each period, especially from the museum's point of view.
"When wings were added to the county building, many items from the previous period were found, but they all ended up in Budapest and Timisoara, which had museums. We don't know what kind of things are there because that's has never seen the light of day. We are now fortunate to have found something from prehistory, and that will end up in our museum," Vorgic points out.
Currently, the material is being collected. This will be followed by washing, processing, comparing, and in a month or two, it may be known what has been found in the City Garden. Asked what was the most valuable piece to date, Vorgic said it is too early to make such evaluations public.
"All that is found is important. A Turkish-era plate, a medieval coin... We found a pillar from a medieval church. Next year is a grand jubilee, two centuries since the completion of works on the county building after a major fire. A wonderful opportunity to accompany this anniversary with an exhibition that would display all the artifacts found in the City Garden," says Vorgic.
The thing that interests curious people the most is whether there are underground tunnels and remains of the Vienna Fortress under the grass of the City Garden.
"What we've seen, I'd say are more likely the remains of waterworks and sewerage from the 19th century. But we are not focused on that part. We are currently most interested in the Neolithic era. I will only say that finding a settlement from the oldest times is fantastic," he concluded.
