Trump's man arriving in Belgrade this week: Goal of visit announced

  • 0

US Senators Chris Murphy (D) and Ron Johnson (R) will visit Belgrade and Pristina this week.

Democratic Senator Chris Murphy announced this on Twitter, stating that they are visiting in order to support the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue.

"Russia wouldn’t let us in, but Ron Johnson and I will be visiting Ukraine, Serbia, and Kosovo this week to demonstrate bipartisan support for the new Ukrainian government and continued dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina. I'm in Berlin today for meetings first," Murphy wrote.

Their visit to the Balkans comes at a time when there is talk of greater US participation in the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue on normalization of relations, and after the appointment of Matthew Palmer as special rapporteur for this part of Europe.

Johnson, a Republican and businessman from Wisconsin, came on to the Washington political scene less than a decade ago, and is a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee,  chair of the Subcommittee on Europe and Regional Security Cooperation, and chair of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.

He is considered to be one of Trump's key men in charge of special missions, who will not be visiting the region for the first time.
