Slovenia to build another 40 kilometers of fence along border with Croatia, in bid to stop migrants

Slovenia has begun erecting an additional 40 kilometers of a fence on its southern border with Croatia, to block migrants from entering the country.

Slovenian border officials say they made the decision after registering the highest number of crossings of migrants in one month this July - i.e., this is the highest number since the peak of the migrant wave several years ago, when thousands of people fleeing war and poverty in their countries were trying to reach European Union states every day.

The Slovenian police say they recorded 1,740 migrant crossings in July, with 7,415 migrants in total crossing the border in the first seven months of this year. They mostly came from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Algeria.

Since 2016, Slovenia has built about 180 kilometers of fence, mostly barbed wire, along the border with Croatia, and this cost about 19 million euros.
