Young man suspected of murdering his brother is grandson of famous Serbian painter

The grandson of the well known and celebrated painter Milic of Macva has killed his own brother. 20-year-old Bogdan Gajic, from Sabac, a town in Western Serbia, was arrested yesterday morning while carrying the body of his 24-year-old brother Ignjat in a wheelbarrow.

Bogdan was taken in on suspicion of killing Ignat, and then trying to bury his body in a forest!

The police caught Bogdan as he was pushing the body down the street, covered with a sheet and a shovel, in an attempt to get rid of it. A clash between the brothers had erupted overnight at the family home in Oslobodjenja Street in Sabac. It is speculated that the motive are disrupted family relationships, and according to neighbors, Ignjat was a drug user, while Bogdan was quiet and private.

"I heard about the tragedy. Bogdan allegedly beat Ignat severely and did not stop hitting him until he died," an acquaintance of Bogdan's told the newspaper Alo, and continued:

"He allegedly even banged his head agaist the floor. I don't know why they got into a fight, but I know that Ignjat was considered something of a troublemaker in his street, in the sense that he created problems in his family. Because of him, they would often fight during the night, when the whole street would echo. Bogdan, unlike Ignjat, was withdrawn, quiet and seemed a little strange. Probably something snapped in his head now because he was tired of everything."

The door to the Gajic family home now has a hole in the glass and there are signs of a struggle.

According to neighbors, a few days ago there was a quarrel at the house, when Gajics were asked to keep it down.

"After the murder of his brother, Bogdan called or sent a message to his parents, saying that some guys had come and taken Ignjat. He was obviously creating an alibi for himself. Now that I understood everything, I have goosebumps.I know the police were there until 10 in the morning and that's when their parents, Tanja and Petar, came home. They and their youngest son were in Belgrade during the drama," one of the neighbors says.

According to their neighbors, no one can say anything bad about the three young men. They were polite and educated, but did not socialize much with the neighborhood.

"When I think about it, I don't remember seeing Ignat in the last three years until this year. This summer he suddenly appeared and then parties began every night, quarrels and gathering of suspicious characters. We attributed their peculiarities to their artistic line, because they are related to Milic of Macva, the famous painter. Milic is Petar's uncle and he is a grandfather to these children. Petar's mother Milica is Milic's sister," said a neighbor.

The police allegedly received a report that there had been an altercation in Oslobodjenja Street.

"A patrol came across Bogdan pushing a wheelbarrow containing the body, a sheet, a shovel, and a bottle. He was headed towards for the local Zabran Forest. Officers asked him if he had heard of the altercation and what was in the wheelbarrow at 3.30 am. Bogdan started to answer in a confused manner, and when officers took the sheet off, they saw a bloodied body with stab wounds. He was asked, 'Who is this?', and the suspect replied, 'My brother'. He was tested for alcohol after being detained because the bottle was filled with brandy," a source close to the investigation said.

The police are working to determine the circumstances of the crime.

Everyone in the Gajic family is talented for painting and drawing, while Petar, the father of the brothers, works as a well regarded professor.

"Petar teaches art at a Sabac school. He is respected! His mother, the sister of Milic of Machva, was illiterate, but she also was a talented painter and everyone was delighted with her art," one of the neighbors said.
