Former Thai prime minister receives Serbian citizenship

Former Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, who was sentenced to five years in prison for corruption in her country, became a Serbian citizen during a Serbian government session on June 27, the weekly Nedeljnik writes.

The decision on the registration of Shinawatra as a Serbian citizen was signed by Prime Minister Ana Brnabic and the decision was published in the Official Gazette a day after the government's decision, i.e., on June 28.

The government's decision states that Shinawatra became a Serbian citizen "based on Article 19 of the Law on Citizenship" - which means that citizenship was granted to her because it is "in the interest of the Republic of Serbia."

Her brother Thaksin Shinawatra became prime minister of Thailand in 2001 but was ousted in 2006. Three years later he was awarded the honorary citizenship of Montenegro.
