Some say that those are just "doodles", but they are turning the gray into color: These artists want to turn Belgrade into the capital of murals
Coloring the grey is not an easy task. Some will say that they do not like that particular mural, others will ask, "Why are you doodling around the buildings?" However, those who are drawing on the Belgrade facades managed to create a festival.
On this, the fourth year, they have one of the most famous graffiti artists in the world. We decided to check it out: What are they doodling?
Behind the train station in lower Dorcol, among the grayness of similar facades, the colors appeared. A deer is proudly watching you from one of the buildings, painted with all possible colors - a work of a Mexican Farid Rueda, one of the most famous mural artists in the world. He is a guest of the festival of street art in Belgrade "Runaway".
- I came here when I was invited by a Serbian artist Andrej Pianist, who wanted to "bring" my work here, in order to say to people: "Look, we can really make great things, we can do something different, we can bring people from other countries who are interested to create art. We just have to open the doors." I come from a country rich with culture. Mexico breathes with Spanish culture and I am not referring to Aztecs and Maias, every country has its own culture and tradition. Painting of the walls is unbreakable part of Mexico and I wanted the move a part of its spirit to Belgrade - explains Rueda.
Festival "Runaway" opened the doors of Belgrade to the world street artists four years ago. However, just a part of the world scene touched the facades of our capital with Farid. First, on Bezanijska Kosa, and now on Dorcol.
- My idea was to make an "urban district" on Bezanijska Kosa, just like the world cities and to get a festival which can list Belgrade and Serbia on the world map of cities like Miami, Los Angeles, Melbourn... between 1.300 and 1.400 square meters have been painted so far on Bezanijska Kosa. The new thing is that "Runaway" crossed the bridge and it reached the lower part of Dorcol, so this is the first "Downtown runaway". I expect it to be a great project, especially because it was announced that here, where we are standing, will be a walkway.
Although many will say that he and his colleagues are "doodling" on buildings, he won't give up until the murals become the main part of Belgrade culture. The guest from Mexico immediately recognized that potential.
- Perhaps I can understand why people aren't used to this here. Perhaps the thing is not if they like it, but that they have to get used to this kind of art. Murals aren\t something that happens only now, they will be here in 20 years. Most of the main cities in Europe have the streets full of murals, where people go just to see them. That is why I think that Belgrade has great potential because many cities have no room for drawing, and here, you have a lot, and you should use it and turn it into a culture - things Farid.
