Construction began in July 1930. The total length of the bridge was 474 meters. As the first road bridge, it was opened on December 16, 1934, and it was opened by the prince Pavle Karadjordjevic. Approximately 150,000 people walked over the bridge on the day of the opening.
King Alexander's Bridge was the road bridge across the Sava River in Belgrade and was demolished during the Second World War, after which the Branko's Bridge was erected in his place.
This bridge, named King Alexander's Bridge, was demolished in wartime destruction, more precisely on April 12, 1941. by blowing it up by the army of Kingdom of Yugoslavia in order to stop the German armed forces from crossing to the other side, so it had a relatively short service time.
A tragic event is linked to the demolition of the bridge: it speaks about the chaos of our army during the April war. The bridge was demolished at the moment when a ship "Tanasko Rajic" was under it, which was going towards Ostruznica...
The engineers couldn't see that 110 were passing under the bridge during the night. The metal construction came crashing onto the ship and 95 people lost their lives on the spot.
