47-year-old Serb was killed by an enormous amount of snow when he was standing with three other colleagues on the roof of a house in a place called Falsten, on the territory of Austrian province Salzburg.

Continuous snowfall accumulated snow on the roofs of the houses, and the burden of the snow mass threatens to damage the roofs, which leads to the cleaning of snow in the affected places.

The Serb, working in a construction company dealing with roofs, together with four colleagues, was supposed to clean the snow from a house. 

A large amount of snow caught them on the roof and they fell down six meters and then they were completely covered and under snow.

Passers and neighbors, who saw what was going on, immediately started digging in the snow to take out the workers in trouble.

Red Cross came to the scene of the accident with a helicopter, together with an ambulance and a team for emergency situations, including 20 firefighters.

A man died on the spot, two of his colleagues suffered light injuries, and one of them was not injured.

- We were already on the scene with two vehicles due to the trees that fell down due to the weight of the snow - said the chief of the firefighting team Helmut Sep.

He said that they are were alarmed and they got to the scene in just 3 or 4 minutes and they managed to get all of the workers out of the snow.

The Serb was under the snow mass for more than 15 minutes.

According to the police workers, during the cleaning of the roof, they didn't stick to the safety procedures, they didn't secure themselves.

- The question of legal responsibility will have to be clarified - said the spokesman of the police Hans Wolfgruber.

The labor inspectorate was also alarmed which will check of the workers worked according to the safety procedures.

The chief of the company where the Serb work is in shock, and he states that the workers were standing on the flat roof above the balcony when they tried to place the ladder in order to clean the roof above.

- A worker just hit the snow on the roof with a shovel and he caused a snow collapse - he said, adding that the accident couldn't be avoided.

Wolfgang Ebner, Head of Construction Association in Salzburg, says that there are currently three or four types of snow profiles and that there is a great risk of avalanches in the mountains.

He said that, although the law requires certain safety measures for workers during the snow cleading, it is not possible to put a scaffold in the yard with 3 meters of snow in it.
