The silent heroes of Clinical Center Nis who treated 30 injured people: War or "Grey's Anatomy" after the terrible collision of a train and a bus

Ever since the moment when there was a traffic accident on the rail crossing in Donje Medjurovo near Nis where 30 people were injured, and 5 lost their lives, there have been quarrels between "Serbia railroads" and "Nis Express", and the people are looking for the main one to blame, but also the heroes.

The victims are being counted, the number of ramps, people pointing at the drivers (one of them is in a coma and the other one is on sick leave due to the shock), there are accusations that the authorities are responsible, the locals are protesting, which will result in new ramps on the spot which had problems.

Unfortunately, the drama is still not over, two teenagers are still endangered, just like a young man who is at the intensive care in the Clinic in Nis.

The head of the Clinical Center, radiologist, and the member of the elite 63rd paratrooper brigade, Zoran Radovanovic, spoke for Telegraf.rs.

- This is our job, but it is really heroic, in the organizational sense, for any institution to take in 30 injuries at the same time! Nothing like this happened in the past 30 years - said Dr. Radovanovic ad the beginning of the conversation and adds that it would be impossible to do it in the previous facilities of the Emergency Center, where there weren't enough room and beds for this.

Imagine 15 ambulance vehicles in one place, 60-70 technicians, doctors, who all accepted that many injuries, and then took them to ultrasound, scanner...

- The statistics showed that we had four doctors per patient, and 30 surgeons were engaged, 20 anesthesiologists, radiologists... We immediately placed the operational program, so we freed all 17 operation rooms, and 11 of them were taken by serious injuries, while we were working on smaller cuts, bruises, stitches in the smaller rooms... The most common were injuries of bone structures: head, chest, and extremities, as well as the injuries of the stomach - explains the head of the Clinical Center Nis and adds that each patient went through the standard procedure which includes triage (division into serious, and light injuries), diagnosis, observation, monitoring...

First patients were admitted at 8:15, while they had the entire overview of the situation at 10:00, gathered numbers of the families and calls were made.

- That is one of the more difficult tasks of being a doctor, and you have to be professional while doing it. You should explain to relatives, mother, father, friends, to keep everything humane and correct - Dr. Radovanovic said, who humbly said that the director has no privilege of keeping the phone turned off.

He confirms the earlier statement of his colleague, the director of the Emergency center, Prim Miodrag Lazic, who described the situation as a war front.

- He was a head doctor of the surgical hospital during the war in Pale, in Bosnia, so he knows what are the mass injuries in war. That is what he meant by it. However, I will remember a positive image that four people pushed a cart, doctor, nurse, technician, and security man. No one wanted to leave their post upon the completion of their shift. That collective spirit is that burst out every time when some tragedy occurs! - concludes dr. Radmanovic with the constatation "God forbid to have something like this again".
