NATO is guarding the airspace above Montenegro, starting from today
Combat aircraft of Italian and Greek aviation forces, in cooperation with the aviation of the Army of Montenegro, will begin regular patrolling of Montenegrin airspace and its protection today, the Montenegrin Ministry of Defense announced.
A landing exercise "flyer-intruder" will be organized on this occasion, as well as on the occasion of the first anniversary of Montenegro's membership in NATO, RTCG reports.
According to the announcement, airspace protection is one of the "most important forms of direct benefit of Montenegro's membership in NATO, and Montenegro will receive support from the allies in the protection of airspace through a non-combat mission of NATO.
Air policing missions have the task of protecting the skies of those allies who do not have their own air force, and there are currently several such missions throughout Europe.
The airplanes of Italy and Greece have been protecting the airspace above Albania since 2009, while Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg jointly protect their airspace.
