The Croatian Hydro-meteorological Institute has announced that there is a possibility for the so-called. muddy rain in that country this week. Precipitation is primarily expected in Croatia, and it is not excluded that muddy rain will start falling in other parts of the region by the end of next week.

The rain that leaves most commonly brown or yellowish marks, is also called muddy rain, and it is also known as yellow rain, bloody rain, and colored rain. 

- Muddy rain occurs only in certain synoptic situations. It occurs over Croatia when the atmospheric pressure in those or southern areas contains a lot of humidity, cyclon field or pronounced frontal system, and southwest or south flow is in the higher layers of the atmosphere (from 5,000 m or more). In that cases, the sand particles from Northern Africa, the areas of Sahara, reach the higher levels of the atmosphere and they enter the cloud systems, so the rain falling through them contain Sahara sand which makes is colored. It is worth mentioning that the rain can be additionally dirty with other particles in the atmosphere - CHMI reported.

Muddy rains are most common in Europe at the area of the Pyrenees and Apennine Peninsula, in Greece where it appears due to its proximity to northern Africa and the possibility to enrich the air with humidity while transiting over the Mediterranean Sea. The Meteorological Service of Spain and the University of Athens are also issuing forecasts of dust concentration in the atmosphere.

- Muddy rain is not a dangerous weather phenomenon, therefore, no special meteorologist warnings are issued, and since it is an often occurrence, the weather forecast doesn't contain any warning about it. It is mostly mentioned as an interesting meteorological phenomenon - they announced in their statement.
