12 babies went blind after the birth in the Clinic in Skopje: Their parents received 600.000 euros in compensation 10 years later (PHOTO)
Parents of 12 babies who became blind or whose sight was significantly damaged after the birth in the Clinic for Gynecology and Obstetrics in Skopje finally won after 10 years of dragging the case across the courts. With the executive order, 40.9 million denars (660.000 euros) were taken from the Clinic's account after the court's decision on the case conducted against the Clinic due to the occurrence of retinopathy with newborns in 2008.
Retubioathy occurs with children that were born prematurely and who stayed in the incubator due to ossigenoterapia. It is most common with children who were born prematurely and whose weight was under 1.300 grams at the moment of birth/
Oxygen, which is a condition for prematurely born children to stay alive, and a small body weight, which is in correlation with the undeveloped blood vessels of the retina, are thought to be one of the risk factors for the development of retinopathy.
This is the second time this year that the bank account of the Clinic for Gynecology and Obstetrics was blocked due to the unpaid executive court decision. In February, 150.000 euros were withdrawn from the account based on the court decision regarding two prematurely born babies who lost their sight while in incubators at the intensive care.
Parents sued the Clinic because their children were blinded because the retinopathy diagnose was delayed. They tried to justify themselves that there was no protocol on the visit by the ophthalmologist.
- Although these cases are from 2008 and the state didn't have a screening program for retinopathy, the clinic should pay a compensation to everybody who sued them, Viktorija Jovanovska said, the director of the Clinic for Gynecology and Obstetrics.
They said from the Clinic that they have enough resources to function normally and that they will overcome this situation as soon as possible.
- And besides the blocked account, the Clinic is working normally and we won't allow it to stop working - Jovanovska said.
