12 meters long body taken out of the Adriatic sea: Croats found a dead whale, it is suspected that this killed it (PHOTO)
A large 11.7 meters long whale (Balaenoptera physalus) was taken out from the bottom of the sea near Losinj, which is a protected animal, and the experts from the Blue World Institute are now trying to preserve its skeleton, the statement from the Institute.
So far it is known that it is a female of a great whale. It is said that the animal died relatively young, although it is an impressive large whale.
However, when they are born, the large whales are already 5 to 6 meters long. The cubs remain with their mother for 6 to 8 months and they grow fast, they don't separate, and by the time they leave their mothers, they are already 10 to 12 meters long.
A large whale is the only Baleen whale that permanently stays in the Mediterranean and it occasionally appears in the Adriatic sea, reported by the Croatian media.
During the inspection of the found animal, no external injuries were found to indicate the possible cause of death.
The animal, as it was stated, seemed skinny, so it was presumed to have died of exhaustion. Several parasitic crabs were found on the body, suggesting a reduced immune system resistance.
Considering that the animal was found near Losinj, the Institute Blue world started an action to preserve its skeleton.
Given the size of the animal and the location where it was discovered, it was not possible to take it offshore and transport it to a suitable location where autopsy and cleaning of the skeleton could be performed, respecting the sanitary and veterinary regulations.
Hense, it was decided to leave the animal in the sea to clean the skeleton through the natural process of biological degradation of soft tissues.
A large whale is a protected animal, so the Blue Whale institute informed the authorities about the discovery and the location of the specimen - the Croatian environmental agency, Ministry for Environment Protection and Energy, the Public Institution of Nature, the Port Authority of Mali Losinj, and Naval police.
