Danijel from Kraljevo saved four other lives after his tragic death: The gesture of his family is a real act of heroism

One life for four others, this is what was the thought of the family of the recently deceased Danijel B. (42) from Kraljevo when the family decided to donate his organs. In the night between Saturday and Sunday, a transplant of his heart and liver was performed in the Clinical Center in Belgrade, and soon, the transplant of two kidneys will be done as well.

Danijel was hit by a truck on January 24 while he was driving his bicycle. Four days later after fighting for his life in the Clinical Center in Kragujevac, he didn't make it. He passed away on January 28 and his family decided to do this humane gesture.

- A heart transplant was performed urgently yesterday morning on a man who was on a waiting list. He is 53, we will see how well will he accept the organ. It is still early to speak about it, few days must pass. When they called us from Kragujevac on Saturday evening, we sent the doctor crew for the heart, the brought it in the shortest possible time because the heart can't be transplanted of more than 6 hours pass. The transplantation took several hours and the doctors left the operation room in early morning hours. There was a big doctor crew in Clinical Center Serbia, also from CC Kragujevac and from Military Medical Academy - Dr. Svetozar Putnik spoke to "Serbian Telegraf", the head of the cardiology in CCS.

The organ was transported from Kragujevac under the police escort, and the transplant team waited in the surgery room in Belgrade.

- This is the greatest act of someone who lost their close ones. People face tragedy and they are still in shock, yet they allow the organs of their recently deceased to help someone else. It is difficult, but above all, a great deed. We don't know if the donor had a donor card, but the consent of the family is always the most important. It happens that you can get only one organ from one donor, it is rare that you can transplant four - said the Dr. Miljko Ristic, cardio surgeon and a head coordinator for transplantation at the Ministry of Health,

Besides a heart transplant, liver and most probably both kidneys will be transplanted from the same donor, which were tested yesterday.
