Serbia on the European path: Two new chapters have been opened in Brussels

  • 0

Another two chapters have been opened last night in Brussels in negotiations with the European Union - chapter 6 on company law and 30 on economic relations with foreign countries.

Europe's wealth map: Serbia is terrible, the worst from all of the former Yugoslavia. Is Iceland the richest country?

The delegation of Serbia at the Intergovernmental Conference is being led by the Minister for Eurointegration Jadranka Joksimovic.

The member countries are represented by the Estonian Foreign Minister Sven Mikser, and the European Commission, the commissioner for enlargement negotiations, Johannes Hahn.

It was expected that the ambassadors of the member countries will give a green light for the third, chapter 33, regarding budget and financial provisions, but there was no support for that.

According to the diplomatic sources of the agency in Brussels, Germany and France were among the states that didn't approve the opening of this chapter.

Diplomatic sources add that these countries are not satisfied with the progress Serbia has made in the field of the rule of law, that is, in fulfilling the Action Plan for chapter 23 that deals with the judiciary and basic rights.

The opening of Chapter 6 in Brussels coincides with the beginning of the procedure for the adoption of the Law on Business Enterprises, thus fulfilling the first of the four criteria that will be required of us. There are still Laws on Auditing, Capital Market and Takeover of Joint Stock Companies, and each is priceless, according to the line ministry.

And while chapter 6 could be closed quickly, the demands of chapter 30 are greater. The first is to enter the world trade organization, which has been postponed since 2010 when we prohibited the circulation of genetically modified organisms.

The benefit of Chapter 30 is that one day the taxes and export quotas will cease to be valid, so we will buy some products from the Union cheaper.

With these two new chapters, Serbia will have a total of 12 open negotiation chapters with the European Union, out of a total of 35. Two are preliminarily closed.

The first next opportunity to open the chapters is in June or July at the intergovernmental conference, although there is always the chance of doing so earlier if we show progress.
