He remained disabled after an accident but, he continued to live: This brave young man from Macedonia is still jumping from planes, he skis and swims. Nothing is impossible for him (PHOTO)
A young man from Kocan, a little city at the east of Macedonia, Vangel Trkaljanov has been in the wheelchair for 12 years, and he is doing incredible things. He said that life can be beautiful despite the hard handicap. He is paragliding, he is jumping from a plane with a parachute, he skis, he swims, he is into rafting.
Summer vacation in Nesebar, in Bulgaria, in August 2005, was fatal for the 19-year-old man. Sliding down the slide the in Aqua-park, Vangel hit his head in shallow water, he broke his spine and he remained paralyzed.
- After the accident, I was two weeks in Bulgaria where I had a surgery, and then I was in a hospital in Ohrid, where the entire family moved because of me. Five months after the injury, I decided I will leave the hospital. I told my parents I will feel better if I watch the ceiling lying in my home, instead of the ceiling of the hospital - said Vangel for sdk.mk.
- When I returned home, my parents hired a private physiotherapist, and then my father and my mother quit their jobs, They were with me and they practiced up to six to eight hours each day. Thanks to that I can sit up now, which rarely anyone can with my diagnosis - he adds.
Thanks to the great help and support of their parents, he was never depressed.
- Life can be beautiful in a wheelchair, you just need right conditions. The support of the family and friends is most important - said Vangel.
His way of life changed completely from the roots after the accident. He was active in sports until that day, and the greatest problem after the accident was that he depended on others about everything, even in the most basic things, like hygiene.
- At the beginning, I couldn't even move my arms, nor legs. I was able to return the functions of my hands with everyday practices, so I don't depend so much on the others. I am at the level where I could function on my own in some foreign land. I can't in Macedonia, there are no conditions for people like me here - explains the brave young man.
He kept practicing at home on various machines, and he is still in good shape, and it is recommended to the people like him not to neglect his social life and they always try to live their life the best they can.
- I am flying with a paraglider and I am jumping off with a parachute from 4.000 meters. I do this mostly in France and Belarus, where there are European championships for people with disabilities. There are no conditions for me to do this sport - said the Macedonian.
Vangel with his team of parachuters from the Aeroclub Skopje got 16th place on the international competition in Minsk, Belarus, held form 13th and 18th September this year, and in the category of people with paraplegia - first place.
- I was paragliding before the accident. I am still flying today, and that is a bit different now. You have to have a running start to start flying with a paraglider, and in this situation, we have to fly with paramotor or with a special chair that is very expensive, from 4.000 euros per person and up. With paramotor, you start from a flat ground, and with a special chair from a steep terrain, or two people lift the flyer and run with him - explains Vengel.
He skis, he does rafting, using rubber boats in high waters, but only abroad, because there is no trained team of people in Macedonia who would help people like him.
In the birth city Kocani, he is going to the swimming pool, and he doesn't need anything to enter the water, he just tips from the wheelchair and lands in the pool.
Vangel Trkaljanov has started working from this summer in the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy as an adviser to Minister Mila Carovka. He previously worked in the company of his father, who has a chain of agricultural pharmacies. He graduated from Faculty of Agriculture because of the family business, the Department of Plant Protection, and postgraduate studies for the production of strong drinks.
He says that he doesn't have any insecurities. He doesn't want pity, nor remorse.
