250 kg airplane bomb exploded in Macedonia
A powerful explosion echoed yesterday afternoon in the industrial zone of Stip, at the east of Macedonia.
Members of the Macedonian Army, together with experts in pyrotechnics, caused a controlled explosion of a late 250 kg Airplane World War II bomb with 160 kilos of TNT explosive charges.
The bomb was found during digging for the foundations of the new factory plant for car parts Van Hool.
First, it was planned to lift the bomb and take it to the military training grounds Krivolak and destroy it there, but since it had two chemical lighters, expert teams of the army and the Directorate for Protection and Rescue said it was far safer to destroy it on the spot.
The military-pyrotechnic experts decided to "envelop" the bomb with dynamite, whose explosive power was aimed at the bomb itself, and both charges would neutralize each other.
- Teams of the Army of the Republic of Macedonia lifted a 4-meter tall and 2-meter wide wall, with the aim to reduce effects of the surface explosion - said Ljupko Georgievski, a member of ARM.
This assessment proved to be correct because the impact wave of the explosion was amortized to such a degree that no window was broken on the commercial buildings and houses that are nearby. Citizens of Sip didn't have electricity for some time because it was turned off for safety reasons.
The destroyed airplane bomb dates from World War II, and Germans probably used it on 6th April 1941, with the intention to destroy Susevo airport and railway tracks.
Ten warplane bombs from World War II were found and destroyed since 2004 in Macedonia.
