There was a big cyber-attack on the National Bank of Serbia: 175,500 euros stolen!
National Bank of Serbia (NBS) has recently uncovered fraud in which it was damaged for 175,000 euros.
Fraud has happened by using fake email accounts and falsified documents. The Central Bank has reported the case to the prosecutor's office, and the immediate investigation included the Ministry of Interior, Directorate for Prevention of Money Laundering and Interpol.
According to the "Blic" source who knows details of the case, fraud happened using the modified electronic address on April 26.
- Fraud happened when National Bank of Serbia received new instructions for payment. Instead of address that ends with opsecsecurity.com, NBS has received a mail with one letter changed. It noted that NBS should make a payment of holographic foil into an account of an Polish bank, on account of "OPSEC Security unlimited".
Holographic foil, which was the reason for this cyber attack on NBS, is ordered by Institute for Manufacturing Banknotes and Coins, which operates within the central bank. This foil is used for the preparation of specific hologram protection on banknotes, identity cards, passports and similar documents.
