Zaovine are located in western Serbia, and they administratively belong to the municipality of Bajina Basta. It represents a forested area of mountainous character, which includes Zaovine village with 28 hamlets, and Lake Zaovine and Canyon Beli Rzav "Sklopovi".
It is located in the southern part of the mountain Tara in the area known as "flat Tara". In geomorphological terms it represents natural bond of mountain massif Tara and Zlatibor and Mokra Gora valley.
With construction of the dam Lazici, on the river Beli Rzav, a lake was formed that pours out in star shape in the lowest areas of village Zaovine.
The dam is 130 meters high and the maximum depth is 80 m. At maximum level of the lake at 892 meters above sea level and 150 hm³ of water, it provides an outstanding visual effect, poured over beautiful area in Serbia.
The reservoirs recorded 14 species of fish, representatives of six families: brown trout, rainbow trout, common nase, chub, barbel ... There are several significant natural breeding bodies, including its Zmajevacki and Popovic stream, and on the part of Beli Rzav, downstream from the reservoir "Spajici". This lake attracts more and more tourists every year, and its water is incredibly clear and has emerald dressing like Drina river.
On the lake there is a large trout pond. About 50 percent of the entire mountain Tare flora is recorded at Zaovine, which is about 15 percent of the flora of Serbia. Around 600 plant species have been determined in this area.
From a total number of recorded species, around 55 plants were on preliminary Red list of flora of Serbia, among 330 internationally significant plants that live in Serbia, 25 species can be found in Zaovina region.
At Zaovina area, there are 15 plant species that are protected like natural rarities, like Edelweiss, and there are sub endemic Kendilka. Pancic's field milkweed, and representatives of family Orchidaceae which were proposed to be included on the list of the Regulation on the protection of natural rarities.
