It was general opinion that UEFA Cup was stronger than Champions Cup that season, because most of the Red Star rivals were on leading positions in home championship.

Overcrowded stadium was something Red Star was recognizable for that season, and the proof of that were 95.000 fans in the first semifinal match against Hertha played on this day 38 years ago.

So, it was 11 April 1979 when Red Star won with 1:0 with Dusan Savic goal in 7th Minute of the game and they waited for rematch. It turned out that the goal was worth in gold, since the Germans won 2:1 in rematch.

- I scored against Bromwich from a free kick, Arsenal at Highbury with a volley, and Hertha with my specialty, header. We mixed the defense of Germans in the penalty area, i moved backward, and suddenly forward, and Lukic took guard to another post. I charged to a first one and i got ideal ball. I stroke it with my head and sent the ball into the net. Goal for the lead, and as it turned out, the famous victory of 1:0, which walked us through the finals that season - said Savic, who literally went with his head against a foot to get to the ball quicker.

Red Star was deprived of Milos Sestic who was injured in the first match, but he shined in Germany with his goal in 73rd minute and set the final score (2:1).

Red Star team consisted of: Aleksandar Stojanovic, Zoran Jelikic, Mile Jovin, Nikola Jovanovic, Dragan Miletovic, Ivan Juricic, Ducan Lukic (Milko Djurovski), Djordje Milovanovic, Dusan Savic, Zdravko Borovnica and Nedeljko Milosavljevic.

The coach was the legendary Branko Stankovic.
