Mystery of Serbian fortress where birds ate a girl tied to a rock: These beautiful towers hide the greatest secret (PHOTO)
On the steep and inaccessible rock on the right bank of the Danube, rises Golubac fortress with ten towers and two large gate. She lives through centuries her own separate life through myths, stories and legends. The beliefs are intertwined in traditions that this is a place where villas, rusalkas and other mythological creatures gather, like a man with horns and a beard that disappears as soon as the light appears, to the legend of the lost Roman treasure, which was suddenly engulfed in the cave, as well as of all of those who later tried to find it.
There are no precise data on when the fortress was built, and according to some written documents, it is mentioned for the first time in 1335 as Hungarian military fortress. And the name creation Golubac is tied to the legends.
One says it got its name after the Byzantium princes Jelena, who was imprisoned in in the tower and she quenched her sorrow by raising pigeons, the other legend speaks about a pretty girl named Golubana, who was tied by Turkish pasha by the rock, and after a cruel torture, left her body to the birds because she refused her love.
There are those who claim that the city got the name after wild pigeons which nested around surrounding cliffs. This beautiful structure is just one detail in that part of Serbia.

Reality and legends mix there more than anywhere in Serbia there, and it is hard to see the line between them.

The art of prehistoric inhabitants of Lepenski Vir, which is characterized by stone sculptures of fish-like deities, have impressed the world. Remains of Viminacium, the capital of the Roman province of Upper Moesia and an important Roman military camp, located near Kostolac.
Felix Romuliana, near Zajecar, is one of the most representative and most complex monument of Roman court architecture and is under protection of UNESCO.
