What is the real background of Thaci's plan for the formation of the army
Kosovo President Hashim Thaci wants to strengthen his party with the creation of a Kosovo army and to extort early elections, according to the European edition of the Politiko Portal.
Portal adds that Thaci could come into conflict with Western patrons.
Thaci said for Politiko that "creation of the army of Kosovo can not be stopped" and that Kosovo is "an independent and sovereign country".
- We can not allow Belgrade or anyone else to veto an issue of sovereignty and integrity of Kosovo, like the army - said Thaci.
Politiko states that the leader of Kosovo Albanians has "retreated for now" and adds that "it is still a question that causes division, with burdened tension between Albanian majority and Serbian minority, and with risk to exacerbate tense relations between Kosovo and Serbia" .
The attempt to impose the creation of Kosovo Army has brought Thaci into "conflict with western allies", points Politiko and adds that "Thaci wants an army, but the west must win over Serbian minority before that".
- In unusually stark warning by NATO General Secretary, Jens Stoltenberg said that the Atlantic Alliance will be forced to ''reconsider its obligations" toward Kosovo if Thaci proceeds with his plan (creation of armed forces) - said the European edition of the US portal.
Politiko states that the Western countries that recognized Kosovo have no objections to the creation of the army and helped to realign the Kosovo Security Force, but they are "upset with the way Thaci wants to do it."
Kosovo's Western allies believe that the army must be created on the basis of the constitutional amendment, which requires a two-thirds majority of seats in parliament, and two thirds of deputies of ethnic minorities, of which 10 must be Serbs, reports the portal.
Thaci, however, as noted by Politiko, suggested to bypass that, factually denying minorities the right to veto and planning to amend the Law on Kosovo Security Force so that their capacity is revamped with the change of mandate about civilian into military forces".
- But the United States, one of the most important wards of Kosovo, warned that the change of that mandate without the agreement with Serbian minority would force them to reassess the long term support of Kosovo Safety forces - reports Politiko.
