Cursed places haunted by paranormal phenomena: Screams, women in white, and because of eerie legends, no one goes there anymore (VIDEO)

Places where unexplained things happening were Jurjevsko old cemetery in the Upper Town, villas Auer in Nazorova 10, Villa Rebar on Sljeme, the old hospital Brestovac... in Zagreb.

EIGHT DECADES OLD MYSTERY: Greatest curse of the capital, or just unfortunate destiny of supporting pillar of Branko bridge?

Nobody has done serious research on all this in Croatia,, and there are many places that gruesome legends and unexplained experiences are recounted.

HOSPITAL BRESTOVAC

Spirit of Ljerka Sram and killed patients 

Many legends are associated with hospital Brestovac, once the most modern hospital for the treatment of diseases of the respiratory system in this part of Europe, built on the slopes of Medvednica, writes portal 24sata.hr. Its construction was initiated by a physician and journalist Milivoj Dezman primarily out of love for the Zagreb beauty and actress Ljerka Sram, who suffered from tuberculosis.

She died on Dezman's hands precisely in this sanatorium. He worked until 1968, when it was closed due to changes in the health system due to new medical methods of treatment of tuberculosis, and soon after that the legend began to spread around the city that strange energy can be felt around the city and that there are ghosts wandering around Brestovac. Many argue that this is the spirit of the beautiful actresses from Zagreb.

This sad story is just one in a series of grisly deaths in Brestovac. Many patients, just like Ljerka Sram, were suffocated by bloody cough in their rooms at Brestovac. 

During World War II Brestovac served as a hospital for the wounded - the Germans, Home Guard and the Ustasha, but also civilians.

VILLA AUER, NAZOROVA

Cries, banging, laughter, and the creaking of the old cemetery

One of them is the story about villa of former respectable family  Auer, in Nazorova 10, in the British square. It was built in 1903, according to the plan of architect Viktor Kovacic. The myth of strange energies that are found on this site began even during construction, in 1903, when it was built as one of the three villas on the street.

Its exact location is on the border between the Nazarova street and Rokov park, which is also referred to as haunted, probably because it is a place of former old cemetery. Little church on Rokov park speaks about that, while in number 8, there used to be a morgue before. Remains of the old cemetery were moved in 1907, and it was enough for the place to remain haunted. 

The last owner Zdravko Raskaj began its reconstruction, but the old story is still retold. There is a water source on the ground around the house, and the nearby residents were able to go to the house to fetch water when there was a water shortage.

Some of them testified disturbing sounds such as creaking, tears, sobs, laughter, banging, chains that could be heard from the house... Those less prone to stories about the curse attribute this to youth who often gathered there with alcohol. The report also mentions a neighbor who wanted to lower the price of the villa and he is deliberately spreading stories about the curse.

VILLA REBAR

Tunnels with treasures under Villa Rebar 

There are few buildings in Zagreb that have so much mystical stories around it and fatal accidents as Villa Rebar. Its history goes to 1920 of the last century. At the time, there was a hunting lodge in that place, and city Zagreb built a new villa with tennis court there in 1932.

It was build by the project of Ivan Zemlak and it was rebuilt during World War II. During WW II it was used by Ustasha leader Ante Pavelic as his residence, and he allowed for few bunkers to be built around it with tunnel shelter connected with narrow evacuation tunnels with the shelter.

Some of those tunnels are not fully discovered even today, and it is unknown what they are hiding. After Pavelic left the house, it was empty for some time, and it was turned into a children's resort and mountain lodge.

At the end of the fifties of the last century it became a part of the hospitality object "Risnjak" and it was repurposed it into an exclusive hotel and restaurant business and a disco. Villa Rebar tells its story when in 1967 Stjepan Lamze fell from the balcony to a lower floor at the end of terrific career in Dinamo. Celebrations were held in the villa, weddings and graduation parties, and during weekend there was a life music. 

A fire broke out in 1979 and everything burned to the ground, and that gave the mystic lovers cause for various stories. However, Branimir Spoljaric, author of the book "Old Zagreb, from vugla to vugla", writes that the fire was set by former waiter, pyroman. Tunnels were the cause for numerous legends. One of them says that Pavelic treasure still hides in some of the walled tunnels.

JURJEVSKO CEMETERY

Girl is a white dress from cemetery 

One of the places that is considered to be haunted is Jurjevsko cemetery, once known as cemetery "by the chestnut tree". Wooden chapel for St Jurju was mentioned in far 1377, and before that it was a cemetery for the poor.

New, brick chapel was made in 1729 dedicated to St Jurju, with a crypt and expended cemetery for it, and in 1825, city magistrate decided to buy the vineyards from the east and north side to further expand it. 

Jurjevsko cemetery was closed in 1876 when digs were started on Mirogoj, former property of Ljudevit Gaj. It is interesting that Gaj was first buried on Jurjevsko cemetery, and then it was relocated to Mirogojske arkade.

Jurjevsko cemetery intrigued the attention with legends about poor who were buried there, who are returning seeking for justice, and ancient masons and hermetic symbols on tombstones.

Stories about ghosts and spirits that appear at the cemetery at night are not stopping, and there is belief that some of them are wondering the city. One of those stories is about a girl in a white dress, seen in a tower walled in a palace of Magdelenic-Draskovic-Jelacic, in Demetrova 7, where the storage of Zagreb museum was placed.

HAUNTED GIZELA HOUSE

No one stepped foot in Gizela house besides the owner. Gizela was allegedly a widow. The stories circled that she was a witch, mostly because black cats were gathering around the house, and she always smelled like sulfur, ammonia, and herbs.

Legend says that thanks to her preparations she managed to outlast several generations.

In the early 90s the house caved in, and there was no sign of the former owner in the ruins. Few residential buildings were supposed to be built in the land, but all projects eventually failed, while new houses and buildings are growing in the nearby sites and the stories go about the house being cursed and that it why no one has luck building in that terrain.
