Nikola walked the longest hiking trail in the world: After 4270 km, he realized where we are all wrong (PHOTO) (VIDEO)
Nikola Horvat (37) from Zagreb has walked 4279 kilometers in 163 days, mostly alone, with a backpack on his back and basic survival necessities, through woods, deserts, wild west of USA and the entire Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), one of the most attractive and longest mountain trails in the world.
PCT goes from Mexican border on the American west, goes through California, Oregon, Washington, and ends in the place Manning Park, 15 kilometers north from the state of USA and Canada. The trail leads through Mohave desert in one way, and then through Sierra Nevada, with altitudes of 3000-4000 m.
- I mostly walked alone, especially during the day, but i met a lot of hikers from all over the world. I walked through Sierra alone, but i have been through crisis. I broke a toe on my right foot in Yosemite, but that did not discourage me - said Nikola Horvat, who became a "true hiker" by completing this trail.
What it means to be five months in wild, alone? - he was asked by Jutarnji.hr.
- You can't think upfront what will that experience bring, because it is different when you are on the mountain for two - three days, this is nothing like that. You can't predict if you will function physically in those conditions, because you are walking for weeks, months, and you are changing with your steps, you are changing slowly as you are walking, you don't notice those changes immediately. Only when you return to your old life you see how different you are, how big impact it had on you - he said honestly, and then he continues:
- PCT made me more emotional, my view towards life has changed greatly, what mattered once, like great job, home, car, doesn't matter anymore, i felt the happiness and fulfilled life in entirely different things. While i was walking i often lacked in water, food, attention of people close to me, i missed physical touch, and i felt that those things we are running after in the city are often worthless, while "the little things" many take for granted, are actually the foundation of life's happiness.
He was wearing around 17 to 22 kilograms in his backpack. The weight varied mostly depending on amount of water and food he carried. In some desert areas he had to take up to six liters of waters. He was walking in one go for nine days, so he had to carry food for all nine days.
According to him, nature is a great challenge, but also everything what remains and what gives us life, and that is why we should return to it.
- There were days when i had to create strategy how to survive to the next period, where to put food and water, how much i can spend per day. Not to say that i had to worry at night if some animal was going to attack me. But along the way i met many people and i realized that life is about small things, but you can't know that until you put yourself in the situation that gives you true insight to accept that - he said.
