Remarkable similarities in the statements of Slobodan Milosevic and Donald Trump. American journalist warns of the consequences of such inflammatory speeches

What Slobodan Milosevic Taught Me About Donald Trump, is the name of the article, recently published by the american journalist Peter Maass on the portal "The Intercept". Maass, who interviewed at the time Yugoslav president found remarkable similarities in the statements of Slobodan Milosevic and american president. These statements marked the beginning of the political rise of Milosevic, while Trump sent similar messages in his inauguration speech, or at the beginning of his reign.

In his inauguration speech, Donald Trump recalled the rhetoric that is known to everyone who lived in the Balkans in the 1990s, writes Maass.

- "You will never be ignored again,” Trump thundered, with Congress as his backdrop. He expanded on the idea a few days later, during a visit to the Department of Homeland Security, where he said:

“To all of those hurting out there, I repeat to you these words, we hear you, we see you, and you will never, ever be ignored again.” -

Trump’s message was a variation, directed at his largely white constituency, Maass said, Trump is not Milosevic and the United States is not Yugoslavia, of course, but these and similar statements can be dangerous.

In that sense, Maass reminded on Milosevic visit to Kosovo and Metohija in 1987 when he said to the frightened representatives of Serbian people the anthological statement:

- "No one can beat you" -

Soon the Serbs, exasperated with the Albanian terror began to shout the name of Milosevic. Since that visit, Maass recalls, his political rise started, which led to an almost fatal consequences for the Serbian nation.

In his text, Maass describes an interview with former Serbian and Yugoslav president, but also how nationalistic rhetoric may influence the deeply divided society, as US is today.
