This beautiful island in Adriatic sea is dying, desolation crept into every pore: The time has stopped, people are crying out for - life! (VIDEO)

Residents of small Croatian islands are more and more concerned about the lack of basic living conditions during winter months. That leads to emigration of young and alarming population declines. Dnevnik.hr reporter visited the island Vrgada, where during winter, there is nothing but a shop and a coffee place.

Vrgada is an island where time has stopped it seems, and the desolation crept into every pore of life. 40 loaves of bread travels every morning to Vrgada. Precisely at 10:30 bread arrives to the island. And that is the only part of the day when some kind of life is felt there, with a small glimpse of home for a small shop.

- We are even thinking about closing from New Year to May, we just can't pay for the expenses - said Zivko Matulic, the owner of the shop.

Mailman comes twice, and priest once a week to this island. You can't use cars on the island. On, so called, the "bench of wisdom", which is actually laid wooden pillar, the only form of social life is taking place.

- It lacks, what you say, the care of the state for the citizens themselves and those laws that are good are just not noticed - said Zoran Krpetic.

There are 150 residents on Vrgada during winter, mostly of them are elderly people. They can go to land four times a day, and only twice during weekend. But there is little entertainment.

- Do you know what bothers me? We are neglected, brother - said Jovanka Punos.

Everything is closed during the winter but a coffee shop. Six fraternities are active (Catholic Association), which are worried about emigrations.

- Without new workplaces there is no life on the island - said Mirko Punos, the president of St Nikola fraternity.

It reflected to school which has only 4 pupils.

- When i was in lower grades, there were 14 or 15 students - said Vlatko Brnin, eight grade student.

- I don't see any future on this island - said Danijel Brnin, seventh grade student.

With less and less children, Vrgada is slowly going into sleep - with 30 minutes travel to the mainland. So close and yet so far.
