The prisoners in the largest Macedonian prison "Idrizovo" in Skopje revolted last night, fearing for their lives after a series of strong earthquakes that hit the Macedonian capital.
Skopje's Telma TV claimed that the prisoners started shouting and slamming the door and bars asking the guards to let them go out of the old buildings of the male department. They were told that they can not escape from the yard because it is surrounded by high wall.
The guards tried to calm the situation, but it escalated, so they had to inform the prison director Zivko Pejkovski. It was around midnight when he came to the prison and somehow managed to calm the situation saying that there is no danger even if a stronger earthquake struck.
I Skopje prisons "Idrizovo" and "Sutka", locks on the doors present great danger in the case of earthquakes because they have to be opened one by one since there is no electric system to open all doors at once.
Therefore, a series of earthquakes Skopje prisoners survived in panic and fear that they will not succeed to go out in case of strong earthquakes because keepers will not make in time it to unlock all locks on the doors of the cells.
In the prison "Idrizovo" the most risky place is the man department because it is an old shabby building. That's why prisoners fear that the building might just collapse with stronger earthquake, and they wouldn't be able to go out in safety on time.
Telma TV asked the prison Warden Zivko Pejkovic and the director of Directorate for execution of sanctions Lidija Gavrilovska which are protocols and how to behave in prison in the case of elemental disasters, but they did not get an answer.
And while the institution toss responsibility to each other, prisoners fear that they will be stuck behind bars with no chance to escape in case of stronger earthquakes.
