CAN A TORNADO HIT BELGRADE? We contacted meteorologists after the disaster in JAGODINA (PHOTO) (VIDEO)

Jagodina was hit around 13:30 with a strong storm followed with a weather phenomena that is not so common, especially not in Serbia, it was a sky leech.

The appearance of a leech, as is called this type of tornado, do not occur often and are much weaker than American tornadoes that happen much more frequent.

- Depending where this weather phenomena happens it is called a leech, if it starts over the sea, or landspout if it starts over the land, as was the case yesterday in Jagodina - says Nedeljko Todorovic from the Republic Hydrometeorological Institute of Serbia.

They are most most common between May and August, because there are many thunderstorms and they can not be predicted, adds Todorovic.

Landspout can be missing for several years, and it can appear up to five or six times during one year.

- Two years ago, more precisely in 2014. when there were great floods in Serbia, multiple cases of landspouts were recorded. In Lazarevac, in the area of Vlasinsko Lake, Zlatibor, and Nova Varos - says Todorovic.

This weather disaster can happen in Belgrade, and the last time something like this was recorded seven to eight years ago.

- The landspout appeared eight years ago on the sky above Vozdovac, but it lasted considerably shorter than the one in Jagodina. There are no rules, it can appear in flat or mountain terrain. 

As reported by the Informative service of Jagodina, in the village Dragocvet, around 10 kilometers west from Jagodina, where the landspout was recorded, there were collapsed or damaged roofs on 35 houses, and there was significant damage to greenhouses and agricultural machinery.

The authorities of the Municipality of Jagodina announced that all homes damaged in yesterday storm will receive help via construction material.
