The first president of Republika Srpska, Radovan Karadzic, was sentenced to 40 years in prison for war crimes committed in Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1992 to 1995, at the Hague Tribunal on Thursday, March 24.

Karadzic and the Hague Tribunal's prosecution have the right to appeal the judgment.

Until the judgment is final, Karadzic will stay at the Hague Tribunal's detention unit.

The Hague Tribunal convicted the first president of Republika Srpska, Radovan Karadzic, of genocide against the Muslim population in the area of Srebrenica in 1995, crimes in Sarajevo, hostage-taking and a large number of war crimes in seven Bosnian municipalities.
