African majority was stripped of all human and political rights.

After this horrible crime, UN decided in 1966 to start honoring this day, because they deemed it necessary that all countries in the world should strive to eliminate all the forms of racial discrimination.

Commissioner for equality protection Brankica Jankovic stated that this year it is extremely important to honor this day because of the migrant crisis which is a major challenge for the contemporary society.

According to her, only a small number of complaints has reached their office, and they were usually connected to media strengthening prejudices and intolerance.

- Honoring the freedom of speech, but also the obligation that this freedom does not endanger the freedom of others, commissioner pointed to the necessity of tolerant and humane relation to the people who ran away from war areas - she stated and added that Serbia has proved itself a a good example in this situation

Like in previous years, the commissioner has had many complaints connected with discrimination of Roma people in different areas of life: from health care up to living conditions.

- UNHCR also brought some appalling research data in which it was stated that they are on the lowest level of all the groups and minorities in Serbia - stated the commissioner and added that because of the dangers which racism and xenophobia bring with them, it is necessary to be vigilant, and not forget that destroying racism is a long process, and that tolerance and acceptance of differences should be taught from early age.

It is extremely important to build a tolerant and modern society with strong institutions, and every isolated case of racism has to meet the punishment of relevant institutions in Serbia.

Jasna Plavsic, from the Office for human and minority rights said for "Telegraf" internet portal that we are aware of the fact that Roma people are still the most sensitive group, constantly under discrimination and that because of that, the National Assembly has been working on preparing anti-discrimination regulations, first of all the Strategy for prevention and discrimination protection.

- We had numerous results in education, health care, and IDs. 22.000 people have got the right to get their documents and get the basic rights. Educational assistants have proved useful in the schools working with the students, and the relationship with the parents was also taken to the next level - said Plavsic and added that in the academic 2014/2015 school year 402 students of Roma population enrolled into high schools and universities.

According to her, there is a new law getting ready for the end of this year, and it will be in accordance with international standards of human rights, and the illegal suburbs question will also be addressed.

- By forming mobile teams in 20 municipalities we have established a better inter-sector cooperation. As a result of this, members of Roma population have got their basic rights. This is a good practice, and the changes were implemented into the new strategic document which was granted by the Government of Serbia - said Plavsic.

She also mentioned that the conscience of the people was brought to a higher level when it comes to discrimination, but that we are aware that there is still a huge distance between Roma people

and other residents.

As a result of this, it is necessary to work more intensively on extinguishing anti-Roma stands.

- This is why we have given our best to explain all the new things to their population in order to get them to understand what the country is doing for them. The lack of understanding and ignorance are fertile ground for discrimination - said Plavsic.

Telegraf internet portal calls for all the people in Serbia to fight with us against all forms of racial discrimination!
