Albanians destroyed the foundations for the Christian cross in the Butelj neighborhood in Skopje, destroyed the fence, set up tents and placed Albanian flag where the cross is supposed to be erected.

President of this municipality who is one of the leaders of the DUI political party said that the protesters will remain until the decision is changed.

- Like the mosques have minarets, crosses should be in the churches. Macedonia is a secular and multi-ethnic country - said he.

- We do not want Skopje to become Beirut, but we want it to be like Brussels. We are not protesting against the religious symbols, and we will not let this pass, we will make Macedonia to be like Europe - said the MP Ermira Mehmeti.

All the protesters are having Albanian flags and boards saying "Skopje is not Belfast, Jerusalem, or Beirut", "This is a secular state", "This is a peg, not a cross", "Politics away from religion".

The situation is relatively peaceful.

Protesters, among whom is the Minister for Education Abdulakim Ademi and the members of the Parliament Artan Grubi and Talat DŽaferi are playing Albanian folk music over radio.

DUI is the biggest political formation of Albanians from Macedonia and they are in coalition with the ruling party in Macedonia.

Short before the foundations were set, three Albanians beat up the leader of the World Macedonian congress Todor Petrov who was the initiator of the request for the setting up of the cross.

Police stated that there are criminal charges filed against the people who had beaten Petrov.

In another part of Skopje, Čair, Albanians revealed the monument "Double-headed eagle".

Ali Ahmeti stated then that "Albanians should be proud of setting up this monument because it was placed on the 15-year-memory of the skirmish in the village of Tanuševci in 2001".
