Children in Belgrade are not allowed to bring home-made food to school

Students of all elementary schools in Belgrade who are in the prolonged stay after school cannot bring home-made food.

Their parents, in this manner, whether or not they have the money, have to pay 40 Euro more each month for this.

Namely, a decree about forbidding bringing home-made food to a school was given by the Ministry of Health to the City education secretary in November last year.

Parents have just recently been served this information by the school authorities.

- Healthy school kids, who do not have to be on a special diet due to their health are not allowed to bring home-made food to school.

Children who are on a special diet due to their health issues are allowed to bring home-made food and eat in the cafeteria with the rest of the children - it was  stated in the letter of the Health department.

Most of the parents are enraged by this decision, and in the Association of the parents they remind that for the time being more than half the children do not take food previously prepared in school.

- Our association has already been contacted by the parents because they were given these letters at the end of the first semester, and we plan to ask for an explanation. We are told that something is forbidden without saying why. Moreover, parents are supposed to pay extra 40 Euro per month for this food regime. And many kids do not even like the food they get in schools. Why should they then have to pay for it - says Dragana Soćanin, the president of the Parents' Association.

She reminds that last year some children had food poisoning with the meals from the school, not with food they brought from the house.

- I do not understand why the parents should be forced to accept this kind of food schedule - concludes Soćanin.

On the other hand, Tatjana Vasović Novosav, the principal of the elementary school “Banović Strahinja“, says that she cannot force someone not to bring home-made food.

– This decision goes only for the students who are in the prolonged stay, but the lunch is not mandatory. Our children bring home-made food - says Tatjana Vasović Novosav.
