Representatives of the diplomatic corps and UNHCR have visited the One-Stop Center for refugees and migrants in the area of Presevo, and commended the Serbian government for its humane treatment of men, women and children from the Middle East, noting that Belgrade needs international assistance

After Thursday's tour, Head of the UNHCR Office in Serbia Hans Friedrich Schodder spoke highly of the work of the Serbian government and institutions, and activists of the Red Cross, Commissariat for Refugees and NGOs.

He noted that the diplomats could see that because of a surge in the number of men, women and children arriving in the country, Red Cross activists were working in three shifts - 24/7.

They are helping refugees register quickly and obtain direct humanitarian and medical assistance, while checks are being run so as to ensure the security of Serbian citizens, Schodder said.

He noted that UNHCR had offered backing to Serbia to establish the One-Stop Center in Presevo, and was assisting the country in stepping up capacities as more and more refugees were arriving in the country.

Palestine's Ambassador Mohammed Nabhan underlined that he had come to Presevo together with his colleagues, at the invitation of the government, so that they could see what steps had been taken and how they could help Serbia.

On a daily basis, around 2,000 people go through the One-Stop Center for refugees and migrants in Presevo, which was opened on July 8. Representatives of the UN Office and International Organization for Migration (IOM) Office in Belgrade and the OSCE visited the Center together with the diplomats.
