Europe would need to give a concerted response to the largest refugee crisis since World War II, appealed the leaders of Germany and France, while a new wave of refugees is arriving in the EU through Serbia, reports "Jutarnji.hr".
According to Dublin's controversial regulation, migrants are allowed to apply for asylum in the first EU country they enter or be faced with immediate deportation if they request asylum in any other country.
On the interactive map, created according to UNHCR data, it is evident that Germany is the EU country with the highest number of requests for asylum. In 2014 alone, 173,000 refugees sought asylum in that country.
Although Greece and Italy are struggling with thousands of migrants on their shores, it is only a third (63,660 in the case of Italy) rather eighteenth (9450 in the case of Greece) in relation to Germany, according to data from 2014.
In fact, in 2014 more than 43,500 refugees arrived in Greece, but only 9,459 fulfilled the requirements for asylum. UNHCR notes that in July 2015 alone, the country received 50,242 new migrants and the overall number of refugees in Greece rose to 160,000.
In July this year, 50,242 refugees entered Germany, and in Greece, more than 160.000 passed on their way to other EU countries.
A country that is second to the number of refugee claims for asylum is Sweden, which had 75,100 requests in 2014.
Sweden also has the highest number of asylum applications in relation to population, or 24.4 claims per 1,000 inhabitants.
As for Serbia, according to data for 2014, 16,490 people have sought asylum in our country.
