In the Telegraph newsroom we spoke with Nemanja Neskovic and Marko Markovic, while the rest of the heroic team was unable to come by, but we will certainly gather with all of them very soon.
The plan is to start an expedition in the same period as the Serbian army 100 years ago, and that will be in early December.
- On one occasion, two years ago when I was visiting various mountains of our beautiful country with Marko Nikolic, I told him it would be nice to mark the centenary of the crossing of the Serbian army across Prokletija during World War II. He was delighted, embraced the idea and made it an expedition - says Marko Markovic.
Markovic practices sports recreationally and one of his favorite sports is definitely hiking.
- I finished my studies in Switzerland. There I had plenty of opportunities to hike and learn about climbing. My biggest success is winning the top of Cotopaxi 5,897 meters in Ecuador.
Since 2008, Nemanja Neskovic has been involved in the development of adventure tourism in Serbia and is one of the founders of the Club for extreme sports "Wild Serbia". He has been actively engaged in mountaineering for ten years.
- Some of my most important ascents are the northern wall of the Alpine countries: France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria and Slovenia. There are also primary ascents in the mountains of Montenegro and Serbia. In addition, my favorite sport is canyoning. There are many different canyons we first investigated, and the largest that we have discovered in Serbia "Zvijezda (Star)" is located on Tara and was found by the team "Wild Serbia" - says Nemanja.
What is characteristic for these guys is that they are dealing with multiple sports at the same time.
- We also take part in diving, climbing, canyoning, skiing, and caves. All this will help us in this expedition through Albania.
The purpose of the expedition of these young men and the crossing of Prokletija is to honor their ancestors, in celebration of what they did and the sacrifice they gave for us to have what is called today, the sovereign state of Serbia.
- The total length of the road is about 280 kilometers. We estimated that we would need between 10 to 14 days for the trip. A very important factor will be the weather conditions or the amount of snow, which at that time could be waist-high.
On this expedition they will bring food for the first five days, until they pass the most difficult part of the route. After that, they will scout for food and eat what they find in nature.
The starting point of the expedition is Pec and the final Durres, rather the island of Corfu.
The Serbian army retreated in three main directions but their chosen routes will be the toughest of the three, and starts at Peci at 560 meters above sea level and ends at Čakor (1,850 meters, the mountain Prokletije). The expedition will end in Durres, rather the island of Corfu.
During this withdrawal of the Serbian military, 243.000 Serbian soldiers lost their lives, that, at that time, was a third of the male population in the country. Which means that every third man died during the retreat.
Albania was then an ally of Serbia, because Esad Pasha allowed the Serbian army to pass through Albania.
Telegraf wishes these young men all the luck and a successful expedition, and we will definitely meet up with them before they head to their "golgotha". For more information about this enterprise, check out the official website of the expedition: www.albanskagolgota.com
The plan of the project is to create a documentary film that will be shot during the expedition.
