The survey also shows that two thirds of the citizens are against recognizing Kosovo's independence for the sake of joining the EU.

“The most frequent reasons behind supporting the EU integration process are of the economic nature and refer to better future and prosperity (46%), better living standard (38%) and better employment chances (34%),” Milana Aleksic, director of the TNS Media Gallup Research and Development, said at a press conference.

The citizens who oppose joining the EU say that their main reasons behind, aside from concerns about the poverty rise and deterioration of standards, are exploitation of natural resources, pressures, conditioning and the loss of national identity.

“A total of 57 percent of citizens expect that Serbia will become an EU member in about 10 years or earlier, while the number of citizens who think that this will never happen has fallen compared to September 2014 (22 percent) and now stand at 14 percent,” Aleksic said.

The survey comprised 1,265 adult subjects who were interviewed face to face.
