On this day, two and a half decades ago, at the age of 76, died one of the most famous miners from old Yugoslavia, Alija Sirotanovic from Breza in Bosnia and Herzegovina - the hero of socialist labor and world record holder in the digging of coal, whose image was located on the ten dinar bill.

On July 24, 1949, Sirotanovic managed to dig out 152 tons of coal, or 253 carriages over a span of 8 hours and break the previous record of Russian Alexei Shtahan by 50 tons.

His quest brought about a whole new way of working in former mines and was based on a competitive enthusiasm that transmitted to all employees, resulting in growth of annual production in that period.

An anecdote says that the only thing that Ali asked Josip Broz Tito for was a bigger shovel, which was made especially for him and named "sirotanovichka" recalls the Sarajevo daily "Dnevni Avaz", adding that after that, he became a "living legend" and his face was on the ten dinar bill.

Sirotanović was awarded the Order of the Hero of Socialist Labor, he received the award for AVNOJ and countless other awards and honors, and one small street on the outskirts of Breza bears his name, while in the mining areas remains his bust.
