I HUNG MYSELF in DOWNTOWN BELGRADE: Read the chilling story of a Telegraf journalist! (PHOTO) (VIDEO)
Don't worry, I didn't really hang myself. But the fear I felt as I looked at all those terrible torture instruments was real.
As of today, in the casa mates of the Military Museum in the Belgrade Fortress you can see an unprecedented exhibition of medieval torture devices.
The exhibition will be open until mid-October, every day from 11 am to 7 pm, and all those interested can come and have a look at the cradle of Judah, the torture wheel and many other interesting devices which have been used by "witches" and other offenders of the medieval era. Ticket prices are 300 dinars for adults, and 250 dinars for students and retirees. Torture is not included in the price.
CREEPY: Human bones found in a Belgrade school!
More than 60 devices are on display and they faithfully represent a replica of the devices that were recognized by law and used throughout Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries, and similar devices have remained in use in the 20th century.
- This is a guest exhibition that has gone through a dozen European countries so far, and now it is time for Belgrade to have a look. Its owners, partners from Poland, say that the casa mates is the best space to have the exhibition. The casa mates themselves are inherently attractive, and up until today were closed for every day use -said Ana Rajilić from the "Belgrade Fortress " .
Next to each of the exhibition stands is a brief description and picture that shows how and in what way they were used. My colleague (picture below) tried a few of them. It seems that they inspired him. See some of the devices that we found interesting are:
THE BARBECUE
An association for the Protection of the rights of prisoners did not exist in the Middle Ages, as such, unfair trials provided no protection to victims. Thus, the jailers were free to apply various kinds of horrible torture on prisoners, and the grill was one of them. Beneath the grill, where the unfortunate victim would be tied, a fire would slowly burn the victim to obtain the desired confession. We do not know the number of innocent people that endured terrible agony on this device and that admitted their guilt.
A DEVICE FOR HEAD CRUSHING
This medieval device was used mostly in northern Germany. The victim's beard was placed in the wooden or iron mold, with the bottom mechanism controlled by a screw. First it would break the teeth and jaw of the victim. Then, as the pressure continued rising, the rupture of the skull, and leakage of brain tissue would soon follow. This device was used for interrogation and torture.

THE INTERROGATION CHAIR
This device was used in central Europe. The accused was placed naked on this device, and every movement would cause thrusting spikes to sink into the skin. This torture lasted for several hours and usually the torturer would hit the victim further and use pliers and other instruments of torture. The seats were equipped with spikes and straps that held the victim strapped down.
Have a look at the video clip in which Ana Rajilic of the "Belgrade Fortress" talks about the exhibition:
