Saddest day dawns in Kocani: Silence in North Macednia town as fire victims are to be laid to rest today
The funerals of the victims of a terrible fire that broke out last weekend in the Pulse nightclub in Kocani will be held today in several cities in North Macedonia.
A Telegraf crew is in Kocani, where 39 victims will be buried at noon.
The day before the funerals, as in the previous days, there was silence in Kocani. Death notices of the young victims can be seen at every step, while the locals are lighting candles in the main square, and signing a book of condolence placed next to their framed photos.
The silence in the square was at one point broken by two young men who came to put up a death notice of a loved one, while those present approached and hugged them, and cried with them.
Among the locals, there is still noticeable shock over the tragedy that befell that town, many of whom walk in the streets with their heads held down, tearing up.
Since this is a small place, and the number of victims is so high, there is almost no one who did not know one of them.
Citizens took to the streets in the previous days, angry because of everything that happened, and the traces of that anger are still noticeable, especially on a café owned by the the same person who owned the nighclub.
However, yesterday the atmosphere was completely different - that anger turned to sadness as people prepared for today's funerals, which will surely be extremely difficult for everyone.
Kocani residents have not faced a tragedy of this scale before, they are mourning the young people who died, saying it it hard to imagine how their families are coping - but also that what happened affected everyone in the town.
