President Aleksandar Vucic reminded the citizens of Serbia of the importance and role of the Great Easter Lent, which began on Monday.

Vucic posted footage on Instagram taken in the Serbian Orthodox Monastery Hilandar, located in Greece, which he visited some time ago, and added a message.

"Easter, or Honorable Lent, has started today. It is time for restraint, moderation and forgiveness. Serbia is invincible," wrote the president of Serbia.

Easter Lent, which represents the most important and longest fast in Orthodox Christianity, started on Monday.

It is a period of spiritual and physical abstinence, preparation for Easter - the most important of holidays, the day when the resurrection of Christ and victory over death is celebrated.

This lent lasts for a full seven weeks and includes 40 days of fasting, which is followed by the Holy Week, the last seven days before Easter, when Orthodox believers remember Christ's suffering, crucifixion and death on the cross.
