Former Minister Goran Vesic, 10 others arrested in connection to Novi Sad railway tragedy
Goran Vesic, who was until recently minister of construction, has been arrested, reports Informer. Apart from Goran Vesic, Anita Dimovski, Acting Assistant Minister for Railway and Intermodal Transport, was also been arrested.
On Thursday morning, Vesic posted on social networks "I was not arrested, but voluntarily responded to the police, with whom I arrived in Novi Sad and put myself at the disposal of investigative organs."
Vesic resigned five days after the tragedy in Novi Sad, that happened on November 1, when a collapse of the entrance to the railway station building killed 15 people, while two remain seriously injured.
Vesic at the time pointed out that he was stepping down as a man who behaves responsibly and wants to show by personal example that in today's Serbia there is moral responsibility for the terrible tragedy that happened in a sector covered by the department he headed.
"I am leaving this position with a clear conscience and proud of the results that remain behind me as well as the team of the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure that worked with me. I worked with a great sense of respect and responsibility towards the citizens, as well as in best faith, exclusively in the interest of Serbia," stressed Vesic.
Yesterday, Jelena Tanaskovic, Acting General Director of the Joint Stock Company Serbian Railways Infrastructure, also resigned, as did Internal and Trade Minister Tomislav Momirovic.
"I am informing you that I am resigning from the position of Minister of Internal and Foreign Trade. I am grateful to President of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic for his trust, and the award. I am always here for him and for Serbia," Momirovic wrote.
The Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Novi Sad issued a statement about the arrest of 11 people in connection to the railway station disaster - J.T., G.V., A.D. and N.S. are suspected of committing a serious criminal offense against general safety, related to the criminal offense of causing general danger.
Suspects S.N., M.J., LJ.M.M., M.S., D.J., M.G. and D.T. are believed to have committed a serious criminal offense against general safety related to the criminal offense of irregular and improper execution of construction works.
If found guilty of the above crimes, those accused face prison sentences from 2 up to 12 years.
