The Croatian police have arrested Minister of Health Vili Beros, Jutarnji List is reporting.

Besides Beros, a well-known doctor was also arrested.

The newspaper says the operation against Beros and several other persons was launched by order of the law enforcement agency USKOK.

Reportedly, the case concerns procurement of dual microscopes used in neurosurgery, which were allegedly "grossly overpaid."

"The arrests and the implementation of urgent evidentiary actions are the result of investigations previously carried out by USKOK. The aforementioned actions are being carried out in the area of Zagreb and Skradin concerning several persons, one of whom is a high-ranking state official, who are reasonably suspected of having committed criminal acts of corruption.

After questioning the suspects, USKOK will make a decision on further action in the case in question, about which the public will be informed," USKOK said in a statement.

According to unofficial information, one of the arrested doctors is in charge of the Clinic for Neurosurgery at KB Sestara Milosrdnica, Dr. Kresimir Rotim.

Well-known Zagreb lawyer Ljubo Pavasovic Viskovic confirmed for Jutarnji List that Rotim hired him as his defense attorney.
