Gojkovic on Nemet's promotion to cardinal: Step towards even better relations between Vatican and Serbia
Pope Francis has announced the names of the new cardinals
President of the Provincial Government of Vojvodina Maja Gojkovic has congratulated the Catholic Archbishop of Belgrade Ladislav Nemet on his announced promotion to the rank of cardinal.
This will make Nemet, who was born in Odzaci, northern Serbia, the first cardinal in the history of the Roman Catholic Church in Serbia, she said, and pointed out that this is a step towards establishing even better relations between Serbia and the Vatican.
This was Gojkovic's reaction to the head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis, announcing the names of the new cardinals of that church.
"I believe that this will be an additional impetus to establish even better relations between Serbia and the Vatican, that is, the Roman Catholic Church (Serbia is predominantly Eastern Orthodox), and those relations must be full of respect, peace and nurturing the basic Christian principles," she said.
At the same time, Gojkovic said she believes that the authority of the Catholic archbishop of Belgrade, as well as his excellent knowledge of social conditions in the entire region, will contribute to the mutual strengthening of understanding and tolerance among all communities, both in Serbia and abroad.
